Worried about my boy today ...

Tanner seemed "off" this morning, not his usual self, so I decided to run him over to our wonderful vet's office before work.  Turns out it was a very good thing I did, as his bladder was about half full of urine and he had a partial urethral obstruction, which is one of the symptoms of FLUTD.  This is one of those tricky things that affect male cats, but it's usually most common in boy kitties who are overweight and who eat a dry diet, which Tanner is not and does not.

About five years ago, during a routine urinalysis at one of his yearly checkups, Tanner had some pre-crystals, (he was eating premium canned food at the time) and for a brief time he was put on a canned prescription diet for same.  It was shortly thereafter that I decided to switch everyone to a raw diet, and since then he has been completely fine, with no evidence of crystals whatsoever.  So this was a very unwanted and unexpected surprise, and it made for a very long and nerve-wracking day, during which I had to leave Tanner at the vet's so that he could be sedated and a catheter inserted to drain his bladder.  I visited him at lunchtime, though, and other than being a bit glassy-eyed from the meds, he seemed in decent shape.  He was happy to see me, and purred up a storm during our fifteen minute visit.  He's got an IV of saline in to hydrate him and flush out his kidneys, and a cone of shame on to keep him from messing with the IV.  He looks extremely pathetic, but Dr. C. assures me that he's doing well, but unfortunately because of the Christmas holiday and the fact that the cats had been scheduled to be looked after by a teen-aged friend of the family, he'll probably have to stay at the vet's until Wednesday morning, which just about breaks my heart, but I also know I wouldn't be able to enjoy my long weekend/Christmas holiday if I was worried about Tanner obstructing again and someone watching over him who may not recognize the signs and get him to the vet right away.  So as much as I hate the idea, I think it's best that he stays where he is until after Christmas.

He'll be on the prescription canned food again until at least then, and then after the first of the year I'm going to schedule an appointment with our holistic practitioner, to see if there is anything she can suggest either instead of or in addition to this prescription food, to keep him from obstructing again.  Which, I'll be honest, I'm pretty worried about, as once it happens once it is likely to happen again, somewhat like bloat in dogs.  Fortunately, Tanner doesn't have stones, what he has is called a urethral plug, which is a partially solid cylindrical mass of minerals. For this reason, it is our vet's opinion that the underlying cause is very possibly the tap water, so we'll be switching either to a different kind of filter, or going to bottled water.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that if you have a nagging suspicion that something might be wrong with one of the fur-people in your life, do yourself, and them, a favor, and get it checked out.  I felt a little ridiculous calling the vet's office this morning to let them know I was on my way in with Tanner, because of course they wanted to know what was wrong, and I really couldn't tell them. He wasn't off his food (he ate breakfast and dinner as normal yesterday and was on his way to the kitchen for breakfast this morning when I noticed that he didn't seem to be moving "right"), he wasn't crying or acting sick, he just seemed "off" to me, and so I took him in.  This meant that we caught what could have been a very serious, even life threatening, problem in the very early stages, and he is, paws crossed, going to be just fine.

Point is, they can't tell us what's wrong, they can't tell us if something hurts, or they just don't feel "right."  We have to know them well enough to know what's normal for them and what isn't, and looking back on it, I should have known something wasn't right when Tanner insisted on sleeping next to me all night long, which he never does unless it's really cold out and he wants under the blankets.  Knowing what I know now, I honestly believe that he was trying to tell me  something was wrong in the only way he knew how.

Anyway ... for now the news is good - he's no longer blocked, and is resting comfortably.  He probably even has a good buzz going.  But I am worried about the possible long term implications of this, and I'd appreciate any good thoughts you could send his way.

Mancat Monday with Tanner

Cats are so constant ... such creatures of habit and routine.  Every morning and evening, you can find Tanner on the top of the storage cabinet in the mudroom off the kitchen, where he and Olivia eat, eagerly anticipating his meal.  Every so often, he will peek his head around the corner like this ...

and meow, at first softly, and then more insistently if I don't deliver his breakfast (or dinner) quickly enough.

For such a big cat he has the softest, sweetest little meow.  Just love that boy!

Looking forward to the weekend ....

Hi, everyone - it's me, Tanner!  Tucker let me post today because it's been a long time since I had a chance to post.  I hope all my friends out in Blogland are doing well.

I've had a busy week this week on watch.  The neighbors now have some kind of big, grass-eating monster living in their yard that has required my extra-vigilant attention.  Mom will be home this weekend, though, and hopefully I'll be able to get a break.  If so, I think I'll just hang out on the couch and watch Animal Planet.

What are YOUR weekend plans?

Weekend Wrap-Up

Hi, everyone ... it's me, Tanner ... and I just thought I'd fill everyone in on what we all did this weekend ...

Olivia and Finn spent almost all of yesterday out on the cat-io

Aunt K. went away this weekend, so Cosmo was sad ...

So Mom took him, Tucker, and Phoebe to the park and played to distract him.  Then we were tired, so we had a slumber party ...

Where was I, you ask?  I have told you before ... I am a professional Watch Cat ... and I had things to do.

And now I'm getting hungry.  I'd better go ask Mom what's for dinner!  See ya!

Tanner-ific Tuesday

Hi, everyone ... it's me, Tanner!   And on this rainy Tuesday, I am keeping watch at my window for ... well ... I'm not really sure.  But whatever happens, I'll be ready.  Because I am a watch cat ... and I NEVER go off duty!

P.S.  Oh, yeah ... Finn wanted me to remind you that we are 68 comments from our goal and we only have ten days left!  So leave us a comment HERE with your name, how to get in touch with you, and the rescue group or shelter you would like to donate to, and if you win the random drawing, you'll get to give up to $100 to that rescue or shelter!  Finn is doing this in conjunction with the Back in Black Adoption Event

and he really wants to give away some of his toy money to help other kitties, and dogs, in need.  Help him reach his goal, please.  (He's kind of a crybaby when he doesn't get his way.)

Semi-Wordless Wednesday

And this is what we like to call a bad picture two cats on a bed.  (As well as proof that Olivia and Tanner ARE capable of being in close proximity without a certain spoiled brat/drama queen Olivia getting all bent out of shape.)

Where's the snooze button?

Hi, everyone ... it's me, Tanner.  I don't know about all of you, but ...

I'm pretty tired!  It's been a long day, so I'm off to catch a quick nap before dinner.

50 Shelters - 50 States: Delaware

Hi, everyone!  MP here, and today our 50-50 Tour takes us to Delaware.  I've got some beauties for you today!

Meet Pinky!

Pinky is an adult female pit bull mix who was found as a stray and is currently in the care of the Kent County SPCA in Camden, Delaware while she waits for a new home.  Could it be yours?  Come on - how could anyone resist that face?  And I love the way her left ear and left side of her head is brown while the right ear and right side of her head is white.  I know looks aren't everything, but this girl is just lovely, and she looks pretty sweet to me!

If you or someone you know is interested in making Pinky a part of their family, you can contact the Kent County SPCA at 302-698-3006, email them at info@kcspca.org or visit their website

And now ... meet Ares!

I have to admit - this was the easiest time I've had choosing a cat ... normally it's really tough for me - even harder than choosing a dog for some reason.  But this guy reminded me right away of our friend Admiral Hestorb  and I just fell in love with him immediately!  Now obviously, he doesn't look a thing like Admiral, but they both do a great job of rocking a hat!

It's clear from his shelter writeup that someone at the
Purr-Fect Haven Cat Rescue is really fond of Ares.  They report that he is playful and affectionate, with lots of personality and a desire to be right in the middle of the action.  He's also been well-socialized to dogs, other cats, and apparently children as well.  In fact, this sweet guy got turned into the shelter after the kids in his family grew up and no one had time for him anymore.  How sad is that?!!!!!!  Apparently he hadn't been very well cared for in his previous home (imagine that!) and was surrendered with some health issues that the shelter has addressed and he is now in purr-fect health!   Ares is neutered, is FeLV, FIV, and heartworm negative, and current on all his vaccinations.  He's looking for a forever family that will really love him forever this time, and would like to go to a family that has other social cats (or maybe if you don't, Ares has a special friend at the shelter he'd like to be adopted with?).

If you've been looking for a guy like Ares, or know someone who has, email the nice people at Purr-Fect Haven at this address:  purrfecthavencat@hotmail.com  Or learn more about Purr-Fect Haven here

And as always, if you want to see a shelter in your state featured, just send me a comment!

50 Shelters - 50 States: Connecticut

Hi, everyone ... MP here, with the latest 50-50 post.  We're back on the East coast today, in the state of Connecticut, and I'd like to introduce you first to Bruno ...

Bruno is a gorgeous young adult AmStaff mix who is in urgent need of a foster home or a permanent placement with a loving family.  Could it be yours?  Bruno gets along well with both dogs and cats.  Though no details are provided, his shelter writeup alludes to his having had a difficult past and it is stressed that in his new home Bruno will need the appropriate stimulation, lots of exercise, and most importantly, consistency, which, let's face it, is something that's important for all dogs, particularly rescue dogs.  They need structure and a routine to build their new lives upon.  For more information on Bruno, to request an application to adopt him or schedule a meet and greet to see this gorgeous boy in person, please email the kind folks at Meriden Humane Society in Meriden, CT at meridensociety@sbcglobal.net

Bruno sure looks like a doll, and deserves to have someone to call his very own.  Is that someone you? We hope so - and if not, we hope you'll spread the word about Bruno and help him find his way to his forever home!

And now ... meet Libby ...

Libby is an adult domestic shorthaired tabby with beautiful green eyes.  Her shelter writeup states that she is very affectionate and friendly ... and desperately seeking her own loving home and a family to call her own.  If you or someone you know would like to settle down on the couch with this sweetheart purring on your lap, please contact the Connecticut Humane Society in Newington, Connecticut at 800-452-0114.  You can also email them at info@cthumane.org or visit their website

Well, that's it for this installment.  Next stop ... Delaware.  See you next time ... and don't forget to send us a comment if you want to see a shelter in your state featured.

The End Justifies The Means

Hi, everyone ... it's me, Tanner.

So this morning, Mom was all "Tanner!  PLEASE be quiet!  I'm trying to sleep!"

I have to say - I was pretty offended.  What, does she think I'm stupid?!!!  I could SEE that she was sleeping.  But she can't fix breakfast or let me out onto the cat porch when she's lying there with her eyes closed.  She needed to get UP and start risin' and shinin'!  If I had to speed that process along by using the bedroom window blinds as a xylophone and my body as the mallet, then so be it.  You know that saying - the end justifies the means?

My point exactly!

 Have a great weekend, everyone!

Tucker on Tuesday ...

Hi, everyone ... it's me, Tucker!  I haven't blogged in a couple of days, because between you and me, what with helping Mom at work, watching after the other kids (I am the big brother, after all!), patrolling the house and yard, well, I'll be honest ... I've been busier than a noseless dog in a butt-sniffing contest!

I won't bore you with all the numerous responsibilities with which I am entrusted every single day ... so I thought, instead, that I'd post a couple of the pictures Mom took of us this weekend.  Hope you enjoy.

Here's Tanner.  Mom took it with that lomo thing she's so on about these days, and then put a sepia and oil painting filter thing over that.  I think he looks sort of funny because it looks like he doesn't have any ears.  Mom says he is pretending to be a Scottish Fold (they do have ears, but the way they are folded down they look more like owls than cats sometimes!)
This is Finn on the cat tree in the living room.  Mom used the same settings as on Tanner's photo above.  Mom really likes this one.
Here's Olivia looking at Mom.  This one just has the oil painting filter over it.
Here's me in one of the chairs at Mom's work.  It was taken on the lomo setting with an oil painting filter over it.  I think I look regal in this photo.

Me again - same settings as the picture above.

Here's Phoebe out on the balcony behind Mom's office ... sort of similar to the photo she took of me with the lomo setting and the oil painting filter over it.  Phoebe likes to look at the boats.  This one is now Mom's screen saver.  Should I be jealous?
Phoebe and me on the picnic tables outside Mom's office.  We had lunch out there on Saturday when Mom was taking a break from looking at storyboards.  (I don't know what those are, but they take a long time to get just right.)
Phoebe and I relaxing on our office bed.  (Don't we look alert?  Mom had a cookie she was holding up that we really wanted!)
Me ... chillin in the grass after our picnic.
Me ... resting after some hard running.  See how long my tongue is?
This is what I call my "you WILL give me anything I want" face!

Man-Cat Monday with Tanner ...

Hey, everybody!  Tucker's mom here again!  (I promise that I'll keep my posts to a minimum, since the "kids" seem to be doing such a good job of blogging on their own!)

Anyway, since Man-Cat Monday seems to be a pretty universal theme here in blog-land, I thought I'd share a few recent snaps and a brief bio of MY main man-cat, Tanner!  Tanner is a four year old domestic shorthair who's been with me since six weeks of age (like his adopted feline siblings, he was also a feral kitten, and the only one of the three who still had his mother by the time he was trapped).  I'd never had a male cat before Tanner, and I'd always heard all the talk from friends who'd had both genders about how amazingly sweet the boys were.  Frankly, I didn't much believe it.  All my girl kitties had been plenty sweet, and certainly Olivia, though she did have some Diva-ish tendencies, was no exception to this.  But NOTHING could have prepared me for Tanner!

When I trapped him it was with the intent to find him a loving home, but within about 24 hours, I was completely smitten with the little guy, and when a cat-loving friend whom I'd enlisted to help me find a home for him called to say she'd found the perfect one, I had to turn her down.  I just couldn't imagine letting him go.  Now, four years later, I love him even more than I did then, and with the exception of having a penchant for playing a bit rougher than his sister The Diva appreciates, he seems to only get sweeter with each passing day.  He has the softest, most gentle expression in his eyes, the most adorable freckles on his nose, and the sweetest, quietest little meow I've ever heard.  (Lest you get the idea, though, that he's not tough enough to be man-cat material, let me also just say that he is not all sweetness and light.  He does, for example, have a habit of enforcing a strict mealtime schedule, and if breakfast has not been served by 6:30 am at the latest, I can count on the first thing I see in the morning being one of his front paws as he attempts to peel back my eyelid with his foot to encourage me to rise, greet the day, and get breakfast in front of him!)

Suffice it to say, I love this guy a lot, but though I'm sure I could ramble on for many more paragraphs, if not pages, I'll end here and just get the pictures put up!
See - I'm a really tough man-cat!  Look at my teeth!

And see my fancy stripes ...

This is my "lion pose" ...

And this is my No-Nonsense "I am the Man-Cat of this house!" look ...

Excuse me - something behind me has caught my attention ...

And now I must give my manly stripes a quick washing ...

Observe my noble, and oh-so-manly profile ...

Just kidding ... I'm really just a (sweet, loveable) pussycat!  Shh ... don't tell! (And also don't tell a certain Meezer that I have a super duper secret crush on her!  OK?)

Happy Man-Cat Monday, everybody!
