Worried about my boy today ...

Tanner seemed "off" this morning, not his usual self, so I decided to run him over to our wonderful vet's office before work.  Turns out it was a very good thing I did, as his bladder was about half full of urine and he had a partial urethral obstruction, which is one of the symptoms of FLUTD.  This is one of those tricky things that affect male cats, but it's usually most common in boy kitties who are overweight and who eat a dry diet, which Tanner is not and does not.

About five years ago, during a routine urinalysis at one of his yearly checkups, Tanner had some pre-crystals, (he was eating premium canned food at the time) and for a brief time he was put on a canned prescription diet for same.  It was shortly thereafter that I decided to switch everyone to a raw diet, and since then he has been completely fine, with no evidence of crystals whatsoever.  So this was a very unwanted and unexpected surprise, and it made for a very long and nerve-wracking day, during which I had to leave Tanner at the vet's so that he could be sedated and a catheter inserted to drain his bladder.  I visited him at lunchtime, though, and other than being a bit glassy-eyed from the meds, he seemed in decent shape.  He was happy to see me, and purred up a storm during our fifteen minute visit.  He's got an IV of saline in to hydrate him and flush out his kidneys, and a cone of shame on to keep him from messing with the IV.  He looks extremely pathetic, but Dr. C. assures me that he's doing well, but unfortunately because of the Christmas holiday and the fact that the cats had been scheduled to be looked after by a teen-aged friend of the family, he'll probably have to stay at the vet's until Wednesday morning, which just about breaks my heart, but I also know I wouldn't be able to enjoy my long weekend/Christmas holiday if I was worried about Tanner obstructing again and someone watching over him who may not recognize the signs and get him to the vet right away.  So as much as I hate the idea, I think it's best that he stays where he is until after Christmas.

He'll be on the prescription canned food again until at least then, and then after the first of the year I'm going to schedule an appointment with our holistic practitioner, to see if there is anything she can suggest either instead of or in addition to this prescription food, to keep him from obstructing again.  Which, I'll be honest, I'm pretty worried about, as once it happens once it is likely to happen again, somewhat like bloat in dogs.  Fortunately, Tanner doesn't have stones, what he has is called a urethral plug, which is a partially solid cylindrical mass of minerals. For this reason, it is our vet's opinion that the underlying cause is very possibly the tap water, so we'll be switching either to a different kind of filter, or going to bottled water.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that if you have a nagging suspicion that something might be wrong with one of the fur-people in your life, do yourself, and them, a favor, and get it checked out.  I felt a little ridiculous calling the vet's office this morning to let them know I was on my way in with Tanner, because of course they wanted to know what was wrong, and I really couldn't tell them. He wasn't off his food (he ate breakfast and dinner as normal yesterday and was on his way to the kitchen for breakfast this morning when I noticed that he didn't seem to be moving "right"), he wasn't crying or acting sick, he just seemed "off" to me, and so I took him in.  This meant that we caught what could have been a very serious, even life threatening, problem in the very early stages, and he is, paws crossed, going to be just fine.

Point is, they can't tell us what's wrong, they can't tell us if something hurts, or they just don't feel "right."  We have to know them well enough to know what's normal for them and what isn't, and looking back on it, I should have known something wasn't right when Tanner insisted on sleeping next to me all night long, which he never does unless it's really cold out and he wants under the blankets.  Knowing what I know now, I honestly believe that he was trying to tell me  something was wrong in the only way he knew how.

Anyway ... for now the news is good - he's no longer blocked, and is resting comfortably.  He probably even has a good buzz going.  But I am worried about the possible long term implications of this, and I'd appreciate any good thoughts you could send his way.

See Beautiful

We are pleased to be joining the See Beautiful blog hop today, along with Sugar the Golden Retriever who is generously donating $1.00 to See Beautiful's non-profit of the month, St. Anne's Center - Lantern House PET AREA for everyone who joins the blog hop today.  Isn't she awesome?

I've learned a lot of lessons from my animal companions over the years ...

Lessons in loving passionately and wholeheartedly even when you know the heartbreak of loss is waiting, unseen but keenly felt, down the road ...

Lessons in patience, when trying to communicate in a loving way with creatures who don't speak your language ...

Lessons in the joy that is yours when, through that patience, you forge a close and loving relationship, and a shared language, with another creature ...

Lessons in tolerance, when blending together animals of different species, personalities, and life histories into a harmonious family unit ...

And perhaps most of all, lessons in being aware that the many precious moments we share with them are, when strung together, the individual pearls in a luminous necklace of memories that help to in some small part sustain us when they have gone on ahead ...
As one of my personal heroes, Ferris Bueller, was wont to say, "Life moves pretty fast ... if you don't stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it."

Our animal friends are masters in the art of never forgetting to stop and look around.  They can spend 30 minutes intensely sniffing a single blade of grass.  When they feel the sun warm on their heads, they never fail to raise their heads skyward, schedules and deadlines be damned ... the better to soak in the blessed, healing warmth.  They love passionately and unreservedly, with no thought for any day of reckoning or loss that may be waiting somewhere beyond the horizon.  That may well be because they aren't capable of the foreknowledge of death, but I choose to believe that it's also because they would rather focus on sucking every possible drop of joy and beauty out of the present than on pointlessly worrying about the future.
For these reasons and so many others, the two dogs and three cats I am so privileged to share my life with are beautiful beyond all words to me, and it never fails to amaze me that one of the reasons I'm so lucky to have them is because the beauty I see in them, that is all too obvious to me each and every day, was somehow not recognized by others.  Which is those people's loss, whoever and wherever they might be, and my inestimable gain.
So this post is for Tucker, for Olivia, for Tanner, and Phoebe, and Finn ...
My sweet and beautiful friends, thank you from the bottom of my heart for enriching my life each and every day with the beauty of your love, companionship, and abiding affection.  I can't imagine what I could have done to deserve it, but I am forever grateful, and although I know you will never read these words, I hope you somehow feel my love for you all, as I feel yours for me.  I believe that you do.

Mancat Monday with Tanner

Cats are so constant ... such creatures of habit and routine.  Every morning and evening, you can find Tanner on the top of the storage cabinet in the mudroom off the kitchen, where he and Olivia eat, eagerly anticipating his meal.  Every so often, he will peek his head around the corner like this ...

and meow, at first softly, and then more insistently if I don't deliver his breakfast (or dinner) quickly enough.

For such a big cat he has the softest, sweetest little meow.  Just love that boy!

Looking forward to the weekend ....

Hi, everyone - it's me, Tanner!  Tucker let me post today because it's been a long time since I had a chance to post.  I hope all my friends out in Blogland are doing well.

I've had a busy week this week on watch.  The neighbors now have some kind of big, grass-eating monster living in their yard that has required my extra-vigilant attention.  Mom will be home this weekend, though, and hopefully I'll be able to get a break.  If so, I think I'll just hang out on the couch and watch Animal Planet.

What are YOUR weekend plans?

Remember Me?

Hi, everyone - it's me, Tanner!  You might not even REMEMBER me - because it's been a REALLY long time since I've blogged!

I could pretend that the reason you haven't seen me around very much lately is because the other kids are crowding me out and taking my blog turns, but the truth is that I've been busy.  Because, as you may (or may not) know, I have a very important job that often keeps me from blogging as much as I might like.

I am - a WATCH CAT!  This is a self-appointed duty that I took on when I was just a wee kitten, and I have continued it to this day.  I have numerous windows from which I keep watch, and recently I have been quite busy at this, as, for the first time in a long while, we have neighbors to our left. They have a big grey dog that Mom calls a Weimaraner, and a cat that likes to hang out on their back porch. The dog doesn't bother me, but I don't like the cat very much.  I am ok with it if he just stays where he is, but he'd better not try to come in OUR yard.  So far he has not tried to scale the fence and encroach upon OUR property, but if he does, you can be sure that I will be ready for him.

Meanwhile, I spend a lot of my time these days in the mudroom window - ON WATCH!

Mom is nice enough to serve my meals there, and sometimes I even take a break to let her take my picture.

So I guess that's about it - I am a cat on a mission, with  not much time for blogging these days, but I do send my best to all our friends in the Blogosphere ... and most especially the lady cats.

P.S. Tucker wanted me to remind everyone that if you haven't entered our Orijen giveaway, sponsored by MrChewy.com - you can do so HERE. A random winner will be drawn March 31st and announced here on the blog.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Freshpet Reviews Continued (Plus last week's giveaway winner!)

Hi, everyone, it's me, Tanner!  Tucker is tired from working late last night so  he said I could announce last week's Fresh Pet treat giveaway!

This is the ledge in the mudroom where I eat my meals.  Because I prefer a table with a view, don'tcha know!

And the winner is ............................  wait for it ........................  Hound Girl!  Hound Girl, please email us at tuckertellsall@gmail.com and give us your address so that we can send you your Bison Chews!

And ...
Anyone who would like to be entered to win the Dog Joy Fresh Bones pictured above, all you need to do is comment to be entered and we'll randomly draw a winner next week.

Now, on to the "meat and potatoes" if you will!

This ....

is this ....

Freshpet select Roasted Meals!

It's for dogs, so I didn't taste any of it, but Tucker and Phoebe and Cosmo all did and they thought it was yummy.

THIS ...

is what Olivia, Finn, and I got to try!

Olivia and I thought it was pretty good.  Finn has been a raw-fed kitty since he was just a baby and he is not as fond of things like canned food or, in this case, cooked food.  (He's a little crazy, though!)

In addition to this stuff and the treats Tucker has been talking about in previous posts about Freshpet, they also sent THIS ...

Tucker & Phoebe and Cosmo also tried this and reported that it was yummilicious!

So overall the response to these products was very favorable.  Even Finn eventually sampled his portion of the Roasted Meals for kitties, and he seemed to find it acceptable, if not downright delectable.  But then, like I said ... he's a little big strange!

So ok - it's official!  This stuff is delish!  Get your humans to buy you some today!

Oh, wait ... Mom wants to say something.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi, everyone - MP here.  I did have to add my two cents to this post.  First of all, I'd like to once again thank the kind people at Freshpet who sent us a really substantial amount of products to try and share with our friends, both IRL and in the Blogosphere.  I offered some of the chews and treats to my coworkers' dogs and they were favorably received by all.  Unfortunately my coworkers did not follow through on my request to photograph their dogs enjoying the treats/chews.  Two were just plain negligent, and the third, little Baby B the Shih Tzu's mom, had the best of intentions when she gave Baby B one of the Fresh Bones before she went out for an hour or two.  She had no idea that Baby B. would have liked it so much that the entire bone had been consumed in her absence, leaving her unable to take a picture.

Tucker & Phoebe, and my sister, K.'s dog, Cosmo, also enjoyed the treats.  Phoebe's favorites were definitely the Sweet Potato Chews.  They also quite enjoyed the Roasted Meals (which come in a resealable bag) and the Slice and Serve which come in long tubes, kind of like sausages.  The cats (Olivia and Tanner anyway) also enthusiastically sampled the Roasted Meals sent to them to try, and Finn did eat his portion, though he did not initially dive right in.  But then again, he often has the same reaction to canned food on the rare occasions I offer it. While Olivia and Tanner will fall upon it like  they've been starving in the desert for weeks on end, Finn is very much a raw fed boy (he's been on prey model raw since four months of age) and he doesn't often seem to know what to make of even premium quality commercial food, which I would certainly consider Freshpet to be.

As to MY overall opinion.  Well, ok.  Let me get this out of the way.  Those of you who know me from elsewhere, either IRL, or from discussion forums like Dogster, know that I'm a bit of a freak about my animals' diets.  Both dogs and all three cats are fed a prey model raw diet for the simple reason that 1) it makes the most sense to me because it's the most natural, species-appropriate for my companion carnivores to eat and 2) because with all the recalls and shenanigans that go on in the pet food industry, there are very few companies whose products I unreservedly trust.  So when I got the initial query from Freshpet, asking whether they could send us some products to try, I was cautious.  Before agreeing, I did a little basic research and when I didn't spot any red flags in the ingredients, and my digging turned up no news of recent recalls of the Freshpet products, I figured that even though my own animals are on a raw diet, I have a lot of dog and cat owning friends and family who really love their dogs and cats but for various reasons don't want to or can't feed their dogs/cats this way.  Plus, my sister K.'s dog, Cosmo, is on a rotational diet of premium kibbles (Orijen, Acana, Horizon Legacy, and a couple of others) but K. likes to mix some kind of topper in with it at least a few times a week.  It's usually a similar brand of canned food or some type of cooked meat, but because the Roasted Meals come in a resealable bag, it's somewhat more convenient than canned food is, and plus it SMELLS a whole lot more appetizing.  Let's face it, canned food can sometimes be stinky.  That's how it got its nickname stinky goodness!

Also, as I've mentioned before, Tucker is on a thyroid supplement that he gets twice daily with food.  It's a powdered supplement prescribed by our holistic vet, and it is a little bitter.  So I am constantly switching up the things I will mix his medicine into.  I've used jarred meat/veggie baby food, canned food, canned green tripe, canned sardines or jack mackerel, etc., The Slice & Serve proved especially useful for this because you can make kind of a meatball with it and roll the powder inside.  For those of you who rely upon Kongs to keep your dogs settled and entertained while crated or left alone, both the Roasted Meals and the Slice & Serve proved great for this.  I mixed the Roasted Meals with a little bit of meat baby food and put it in the freezer for about an hour so that it wasn't frozen solid but still firm.  The Slice & Serve I was able to pack in there pretty tightly and it didn't need to be frozen at all, though for dogs who are Kong-a-holics you might want to freeze it.

Bottom line, I am not switching the kids from their current prey model raw diet, but I absolutely would buy these products and use them as described above.

Saturday Man-Cat Mandate

Hi, everybody ... it's me, Tanner.

And my Man-Cat Mandate for today is ...

There can never be enough pictures of ME!

Hard to believe I'm still single, isn't it?

Weekend Wrap-Up

Hi, everyone ... it's me, Tanner ... and I just thought I'd fill everyone in on what we all did this weekend ...

Olivia and Finn spent almost all of yesterday out on the cat-io

Aunt K. went away this weekend, so Cosmo was sad ...

So Mom took him, Tucker, and Phoebe to the park and played to distract him.  Then we were tired, so we had a slumber party ...

Where was I, you ask?  I have told you before ... I am a professional Watch Cat ... and I had things to do.

And now I'm getting hungry.  I'd better go ask Mom what's for dinner!  See ya!

Watch-Cat Wednesday

Hi, everyone ... it's me, Tanner!  (Yes, two days in a row!)

And just in case anyone doubts my Watch Cat abilities ... let it be known that I am watching over Mom even when she's at work.  See?

Think someone needs to clean off her desktop?

And here's another reminder ... we have ten days remaining and 66 comments to go!  So leave your comment HERE with the name of a shelter or rescue group you would donate to if you are the winner of our random drawing.  This is a chance to present the shelter or rescue group of your choice with a donation of up to $100 which we're doing in conjunction with the Back in Black Adoption Event.

Tanner-ific Tuesday

Hi, everyone ... it's me, Tanner!   And on this rainy Tuesday, I am keeping watch at my window for ... well ... I'm not really sure.  But whatever happens, I'll be ready.  Because I am a watch cat ... and I NEVER go off duty!

P.S.  Oh, yeah ... Finn wanted me to remind you that we are 68 comments from our goal and we only have ten days left!  So leave us a comment HERE with your name, how to get in touch with you, and the rescue group or shelter you would like to donate to, and if you win the random drawing, you'll get to give up to $100 to that rescue or shelter!  Finn is doing this in conjunction with the Back in Black Adoption Event

and he really wants to give away some of his toy money to help other kitties, and dogs, in need.  Help him reach his goal, please.  (He's kind of a crybaby when he doesn't get his way.)

Semi-Wordless Wednesday

And this is what we like to call a bad picture two cats on a bed.  (As well as proof that Olivia and Tanner ARE capable of being in close proximity without a certain spoiled brat/drama queen Olivia getting all bent out of shape.)

Tasty Tuesday

So we're participating in the Tasty Tuesday Blog Hop hosted by our friends Kolchak the Puggle from Kol's Notes  and Sugar the Golden Retriever

I have to say - this is one of Kol's better ideas - and he's got lots of great ones!  Because what is better than yummy treats????!  In our opinion, not much!  And Phoebe and I (as well as Oliva, Tanner, and Finn) are going to share with you some of our favorite treats AND tell you why we like 'em, AND more importantly where YOU can get some yourself (or get your humans to get some for you!)

Phoebe and I LOVE Plato's treats!  In fact, Olivia sent our friend Remington some of the duck ones when he won her giveaway, on OUR recommendation, of course!  But the ones we're talking about today are the organic chicken ones:

Why Phoebe and I like Plato's:  THEY'RE DELICIOUS!

Why Mom likes Plato's:  They're healthy, don't have nine hundred and sixteen ingredients that are bad for us or that she can't pronounce, and they're made in the USA.  Here are the ingredients:

  1. Organic Chicken (preserved with natural mixed tocopherols, citric acid and  rosemary extract)
  2. organic brown rice
  3. natural sea salt
  4. zinc proteinate
  5. vitamin E supplement
  6. coated ascorbic acid (source of vitamin C)
  7. glucosamine sulfate
* Mom says we should put in that if any of you pups are prone to seizures, it has been suggested that you shouldn't have foods containing rosemary, so maybe you shouldn't have these.  Which is a bummer because they're yummy.

Where you can get some:  Probably a bunch of places - but we get ours here!

Olivia, Tanner, and Finn are very partial to the Chicken Bites from Wholistic Pet:

Why the Cat Kids love these:  They're whisker-lickin' good!

Why Mom likes them:  They're made in the USA with only ONE ingredient (pure human grade chicken)!

Where you can get some:  right here!

What is YOUR favorite treat? Please leave us a comment and let us know!
