Indiana ... Iowa ... Kansas ... & Kentucky

So tonight we're going to combine our 50 Shelters / 50 States Series (which has gone on way too long because I'm a pitiful slacker!) and the Back in Black Adoption Event (which after today only has four more days to run!).

And so that I can feel like I'm making some progress, we're going to do four states tonight (Indiana, Iowa, Kansas and Kentucky), featuring one black dog and one black cat from each state.

Here we go ...

My Indiana picks were:

Trina

... and ...

Purry

From Iowa I chose:

Lexi

... and ...

Clark

From Kansas I selected:

Spot

... and ...

Faryn

And from Kentucky my picks were:

Hugo

... and ...

Lucian

All of them are so beautiful ... I certainly hope they find loving homes very soon.

Remember - don't forget to leave your comment HERE for Finn's Back in Black Adoption Event Comment-A-Thon.  We have 55 comments to go and only four days left, and we really want to give away the $100 donation to the random winner's rescue group or shelter of choice!  Even if you've already left a comment, that's ok.  You can leave one per day until 11:59 pm on the 17th!

50 Shelters / 50 States - Illinois

Well, it's about time we got back to the 50/50 posts - and as always, choosing the one dog and cat to spotlight was incredibly difficult, in more ways than one.  For starters, in case anyone was wondering, there are 1,660 dogs available for adoption on Petfinder within a 100 mile radius of Chicago, and 2,081 cats.  Which is daunting in and of itself, though I eliminated some by selecting for only adult and senior animals, as they are the ones who have the hardest time getting adopted.  Even then, this is still a staggering number of lovely dogs and cats who for various reasons are without loving homes - and that's just within a hundred mile radius!!!!!

Many are in city or county run shelters, facing a highly uncertain future, while others are luckier and have found their way into private rescue, where odds are that they will be kept and lovingly cared for until the right adoptive family can be found for them.  Of course, the down side to that is that until that right home is found, they are taking up space in a foster home ... and if that right home is a long time coming, (or perhaps is never found?) who knows how many other dogs or cats might have been saved in his or her place?  So if you're a rescue, you have to be cognizant of this when deciding which animals to take into your program.  Something which Dog Foster Mom, a fellow blogger whom I much admire, recently addressed in her post Why I Won't Rescue Your Dog.

Now, the up side of this - if there IS, in fact, an up side, is that if you are a person who is looking to bring a dog or cat (or ferret or rabbit or parrot or whatever it is that your animal-loving heart may desire) into your home, chances are you can find one (or many) that fit your criteria by checking out your local shelter, and if you can't find what you're looking for there, broaden your search with the help of Petfinder and you're probably almost guaranteed to find that perfect dog or cat.

Here are my picks from the state of Illinois:

Meet Lady!

Lady is a young adult Jack Russell Terrier mix currently in the care of Homeward Bound Pet Shelter in Decatur, Illinois.  There is not much information in her profile, but it does say that she is an energetic young girl looking for a family who will spend a lot of time with her.  Certainly her mix alone just about guarantees a great deal of energy and a fair amount of brains to go along with it!  And just look at that sweet, scruffilicious face and those adorable ears!  Honestly, this is what kills me about these posts - because without even trying I can find several dogs that I'd just LOVE to give a home to if I was in the market for another dog.  (Which I'm really not, although it's a constant temptation.) Anyway,  I'd be willing to bet Lady would be a great Agility or Rally-O partner, or even just an eager companion ready to accompany her new family on walks or hikes.

If you or someone you know would be interested in offering Lady the loving home she certainly deserves, please contact Homeward Bound at 217-876-1266 or email them at HomewardBoundPetShelter02@yahoo.com

And now, meet Cameron!

Cameron is a two year old male domestic shorthair currently in the care of the Dewitt County Animal Shelter in Clinton, Illinois, where is is obviously a favorite of the staff there, one of whom wrote:  "He's a love bug and one of my special buddies. He's also quite the entertainer. These pictures are in response to me telling him what a handsome boy he is. :) Cameron is very dog-like in obeying commands and comes when called. He likes to hop onto my lap and help me take photos, also. Cameron plays well with others ..."

Know someone who can offer Cameron a wonderful home that will surely be enriched by his sweet face, loving personality, and clownish antics?  Have them call 217-935-3488 or email secondchanceforpets@yahoo.com

50 Shelters / 50 States: Hawaii

Aloha, everyone!  It's the MP here ... and I know Tucker would want me to apologize to all of you for
basically being MIA for an entire week!  There were a lot of things going on last week, and we were also out of town for the Easter weekend, so did not have much opportunity to blog.  I imagine Tucker will be back tomorrow to fill everyone in on what he and the gang have been up to, but meanwhile, I wanted to get back on track with the 50/50:

Quick aside:  I pretty much love all dogs.  Some more than others, of course.  I've tried not to let my preferences show insofar as the 50/50 goes, and in fact, most of the dogs I've featured in this blog series are not those that I would probably choose for myself, mainly because of size.  I've never talked about this before on the blog, (I don't think?) but I grew up with lots of dogs.  Mine is a very "doggy" family in general - on both my mother's and father's side.  And probably because my personal view of things (which I recognize is inherently flawed and possibly discriminatory, but who cares?) is that I don't really so much like or trust or want to be around people who don't love animals, I've naturally been around a lot of dogs of all shapes, sizes, breeds, and temperaments.  Almost without exception, I've found something to love about all of them.  And whether it was the dogs I grew up with or those I've lived with as an adult, a great many of them have been large dogs ... Malamutes, German Shepherds, Labs, Goldens, Bullmastiffs, Dobes, Great Danes, etc.

Over the last few years, though, I've lived exclusively with small dogs, and although I still love big dogs, I've discovered that my current lifestyle is much more suited to smaller dogs.  I like to travel, for example, and I don't like to leave my dogs home, even though I have an awesome pet sitter who stays at the house and who the dogs absolutely adore.  Smaller dogs are more portable.  Tucker & Phoebe are both under the weight limit (Tucker just barely) to travel in-cabin on planes, but they are also super easy to travel with in cars, stay with in hotels (and are small enough to sneak in if absolutely necessary), and as they are also non-shedding and well-behaved, are welcome at the homes of any family or friends I care to visit.  They are also welcome at my office, which is not only nice for me, it also is really fun for them.  And no matter how well-behaved they were, I probably would not be able to bring a Giant Schnauzer, German Shepherd, Briard, Bouvier des Flandres, Irish Wolfhound, Greyhound, or Scottish Deerhound (all large or giant breeds I would really love to have the opportunity to live with at some point) to work with me as I can Tucker & Phoebe.  So in the event I was to get a third dog (which I think about constantly but probably will not ever actually do), it would almost certainly be a smaller one.

Like Patches, for example!

Is he a doll or what?  On his writeup from the Maui Humane Society it says that he is a Jack Russell mix, but I'm not really seeing it.  I see more Sheltie.  What do you guys think?

Either way, he's cute as a bug, and were I in the market for another dog, I'd definitely be giving this sixteen month old, seventeen pound, neutered male cutie a good look!  I think he's just precious!

If interested in Patches, please contact the Maui Humane Society at 808-877-3680, extension 23, or email them at adoptions@mauihumanesociety.org

And now, meet Clark!

He's a stunning adult neutered male domestic medium hair and I think he looks rather festive in his lei, don't you?  Like Patches, he's also residing at the Maui Humane Society, so if you want to meet Clark, give them a call or an email at the same contact information above.

Aloha until next time!

50 Shelters - 50 States: Georgia

Hi, everyone!  It's the MP, here to continue our 50/50 Tour.  We're in Georgia today, and just look at these peaches I have for you to meet!

This is Scooter!

Isn't he just adorable?  Now, I must confess ... I grew up with Beagles (a few different family members had them), and am the proud aunt of a lovely Beagle girl, S., who belongs to my best friend J.  So I am a bit partial to these guys.  But in all honesty - who WOULDN'T fall in love with Scooter?!!!  This guy is reportedly very affectionate and wants to be a lap dog.  He is neutered, housebroken, and crate-trained, and gets along well with cats and other dogs?  Potential adopters, though, should be aware that no matter how well-trained they might otherwise be, Beagles are scenthounds, and often, aptly, termed "a nose with legs."  They will follow their nose to just about anywhere, including right into oncoming traffic.  So if you adopt Scooter, make sure to keep him on a leash when not in a securely fenced area!

Can you offer Scooter a loving home?  He's waiting for you at the Humane Society of Griffin-Spalding County

So give them a call at 770-229-4925 or email them at catsanddogs4you@yahoo.com

And here is a little girl who is just going to melt your heart!  Meet Fanny!

Fanny is a lovely longhaired calico girl who has had a rough time of things.  As a kitten, she fell victim, as many cats and kittens allowed to roam around outside do, to a car engine.  Her leg was broken in two places and she lost an eye.  Now, as a young adult, she is waiting at the Barnesville Lamar County Humane Society in Barnesville, GA, for her luck to change.  This is one little girl who has certainly earned her happy ending!  If you or someone you know is interested in making Fanny a part of their family, they can call 770-468-1409 or email blchumanesoc@bellsouth.net

50 Shelters / 50 States - Florida

Happy Saturday, everyone!  MP here ... continuing the 50/50 in my home state of Florida.

And in this case, it wasn't hard to decide to choose a dog and cat from a shelter right here in Tampa.

Meet Buddy ...

How cute is he?!!!!!!!!!  Buddy is currently residing at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay .  He's a two and a half year old male terrier mix.  He's also housebroken, neutered, and, unfortunately, heartworm positive, but has already started his treatment, and is available for adoption immediately.  Frankly, it's about all I can do to stop myself from going down to the shelter tomorrow and adopting him myself.  I might, though, take a drive down there and see if I can meet him in person and find out some more about him for a followup post.

While I'm at it, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay also has many other lovely dogs available for adoption.  Here are just a few of them:

Tink - 4 year old female Beagle mix
Rugby - 11 month old male Shepherd mix

And now for the felines ...

Meet Sherlock!

He's a two year old male domestic longhair - and although the information on his profile page is a bit sparse, one look into this guy's striking face makes me want to get to know him better.  What a gorgeous boy!

And he's not the only one ... the Humane Society of Tampa Bay has dozens of wonderful cats just waiting for loving homes.  Here are just a few more ...

Any of these beauties can be seen at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay at 3607 North Armenia Avenue in Tampa.  Their phone # is 813-876-7138 or you can email them at Ben@humanesocietytampa.org

And a HUGE thank you to Krista Sparkman of Krista Sparkman Photography for donating her time to take photographs of the animals at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and help them be adopted.

P.S.  Exciting news ...  I was THRILLED to learn, earlier this week, that Ares, the sweet boy profiled in the last 50-50 post has been ADOPTED!!!!!!!!!!  Not that we had anything to do with it, but we're very excited just the same, and are planning a followup post on Ares, hopefully to include an interview with his new adoptive mom, in the next week or two.

50 Shelters - 50 States: Delaware

Hi, everyone!  MP here, and today our 50-50 Tour takes us to Delaware.  I've got some beauties for you today!

Meet Pinky!

Pinky is an adult female pit bull mix who was found as a stray and is currently in the care of the Kent County SPCA in Camden, Delaware while she waits for a new home.  Could it be yours?  Come on - how could anyone resist that face?  And I love the way her left ear and left side of her head is brown while the right ear and right side of her head is white.  I know looks aren't everything, but this girl is just lovely, and she looks pretty sweet to me!

If you or someone you know is interested in making Pinky a part of their family, you can contact the Kent County SPCA at 302-698-3006, email them at info@kcspca.org or visit their website

And now ... meet Ares!

I have to admit - this was the easiest time I've had choosing a cat ... normally it's really tough for me - even harder than choosing a dog for some reason.  But this guy reminded me right away of our friend Admiral Hestorb  and I just fell in love with him immediately!  Now obviously, he doesn't look a thing like Admiral, but they both do a great job of rocking a hat!

It's clear from his shelter writeup that someone at the
Purr-Fect Haven Cat Rescue is really fond of Ares.  They report that he is playful and affectionate, with lots of personality and a desire to be right in the middle of the action.  He's also been well-socialized to dogs, other cats, and apparently children as well.  In fact, this sweet guy got turned into the shelter after the kids in his family grew up and no one had time for him anymore.  How sad is that?!!!!!!  Apparently he hadn't been very well cared for in his previous home (imagine that!) and was surrendered with some health issues that the shelter has addressed and he is now in purr-fect health!   Ares is neutered, is FeLV, FIV, and heartworm negative, and current on all his vaccinations.  He's looking for a forever family that will really love him forever this time, and would like to go to a family that has other social cats (or maybe if you don't, Ares has a special friend at the shelter he'd like to be adopted with?).

If you've been looking for a guy like Ares, or know someone who has, email the nice people at Purr-Fect Haven at this address:  purrfecthavencat@hotmail.com  Or learn more about Purr-Fect Haven here

And as always, if you want to see a shelter in your state featured, just send me a comment!

50 Shelters - 50 States: Connecticut

Hi, everyone ... MP here, with the latest 50-50 post.  We're back on the East coast today, in the state of Connecticut, and I'd like to introduce you first to Bruno ...

Bruno is a gorgeous young adult AmStaff mix who is in urgent need of a foster home or a permanent placement with a loving family.  Could it be yours?  Bruno gets along well with both dogs and cats.  Though no details are provided, his shelter writeup alludes to his having had a difficult past and it is stressed that in his new home Bruno will need the appropriate stimulation, lots of exercise, and most importantly, consistency, which, let's face it, is something that's important for all dogs, particularly rescue dogs.  They need structure and a routine to build their new lives upon.  For more information on Bruno, to request an application to adopt him or schedule a meet and greet to see this gorgeous boy in person, please email the kind folks at Meriden Humane Society in Meriden, CT at meridensociety@sbcglobal.net

Bruno sure looks like a doll, and deserves to have someone to call his very own.  Is that someone you? We hope so - and if not, we hope you'll spread the word about Bruno and help him find his way to his forever home!

And now ... meet Libby ...

Libby is an adult domestic shorthaired tabby with beautiful green eyes.  Her shelter writeup states that she is very affectionate and friendly ... and desperately seeking her own loving home and a family to call her own.  If you or someone you know would like to settle down on the couch with this sweetheart purring on your lap, please contact the Connecticut Humane Society in Newington, Connecticut at 800-452-0114.  You can also email them at info@cthumane.org or visit their website

Well, that's it for this installment.  Next stop ... Delaware.  See you next time ... and don't forget to send us a comment if you want to see a shelter in your state featured.

New Season ... New Look

Hi, everyone ... it's me, Tucker!

Mom & I were talking it over last night and she agreed with me that it was time to change the template for my blog.  I picked it out when I first started the blog, but I'm not sure it's really " us."  We like this one better and hope you do, too.

Mom said she'll be back later tonight or tomorrow with the next post for the 50-50.

She's really excited to introduce you to Bruno and Libby, who are currently residing in shelters in Connecticut and need loving homes.

50 Shelters - 50 States: Colorado

Good evening, everyone.  MP here ... and the next state on our list is Colorado.  I've got two lovely ladies for you to meet tonight ... and they're looking for loving homes.  They're both residing at the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter in Divide, Colorado.

First up is Abby ...

Abby is a gorgeous two year old German Shorthaired Pointer.  She's housebroken and gets along well with other dogs, but typical of her breed, she's a very active girl.  She'd most likely excel in obedience and would love having a job to do.

And this stunning young lady is Brooke - a young dilute tortoiseshell girl with gorgeous green eyes surrounded by "eyeliner."  She loves to be up high, and is a quiet, but affectionate girl who always looks for attention from shelter visitors.  She'd prefer to be an only cat but might do well with a gentle, cat friendly dog.

If you have room in your heart and home for Abby or Brooke, please contact the shelter at 719-686-7707
